Home Life
Expect that your home will not be the same when you invite someone new into your
family who may have as much difficulty understanding you as you them. It may take
several months of exploration and accommodation on your part to find balance and
build rapport. It may take some months longer to help the individual establish a
sense of belonging within your home and your community.
There may be the need for small changes such as re-arranging furniture, and a definite
need to re-arrange schedules. One of the most challenging aspects of becoming a
Sponsor is the interruption of privacy. Much time and energy is expected of each
Sponsor, as such BRRS has mandates for each Sponsor to use a certain number of hours
of additionally trained staff as "relief" to allow breaks. Being attentive at all
times during the course of a day the person is supported, leaves little opportunity
for a "time-out" for the Sponsor, particularly so in the early stages of acquaintancy.
